Is Studying Through The Night Good or Bad?

How often have you found yourself up late at night, burning the midnight oil studying your butt off? I can remember a few of those nights vaguely because at the end of it I probably just collapsed on my bed unable to think, unable to sleep from being mentally exhausted.

Studying through the night can be both necessary and unnecessary.

You probably wondering what I mean by this? That's sort of a really bipolar statement but it's true!

Regardless of whether there's an exam coming up the next day or a month away, studying at night can be a choice or forced upon you. It really deals with how you feel and how busy you are in the day.

Some of you head over to work, bust your head trying to please your boss and then you're back at home taking care of the family. So when is your time to study? Late at night.

Infact, I would blog late at night and for an entire year I could strongly say that not a night would go by that you would find me asleep anytime before 12.

That was exhausting and unnecessary. Let me explain why.

I began sleeping at times after 12 at night from the work I would put in to my studies and my blogging however I would get up at 11 the next day. By the time I got myself in order it was already 1 and by then things go downhill due to many of the distractions in my life. Night would sneak up on me and well you begin the process again.

That was an average night for me and whilst writing this I feel incredibly stupid for not sorting myself out a long time ago.

If I sacrificed just a week sleeping earlier, it could have been highly possible that I would be up at 8 or 9, plenty of time to get some energy in me, study, blog, exercise and even have time to relax before i clock off to bed at 10.

What I just described right now is my new routine and believe it or not, this post was written at 4 in the afternoon. I can proudly say that everything which required my attention has been completed and this is the last item on my list to tick of for having a successful day.

I highly advice that you avoid sleeping after 12, it's not good for you however if by some chance you need to pull an all night study routine then I have a few suggestions for you to stay energized and focus.

  • * Have Adequate Light In Your Room.
  • * Drink Lots Of Water.
  • * Take A Break Every 45 minutes or every Hour.
  • * Do 50 Squats When You Feel Like Dosing Off.
  • * Get Some Coffee or Energy Drinks Down As A Last Resort For Energy (Avoid This As Much As Possible).

Only if I have an exam coming up would I allow myself to put in those long nights however if you're properly prepared in advance, you won't need to sleep at 3 in the morning and be forced to get up at 8 to write your exam all flustered and exhausted.

Late Nights are the primary cause for fatigue and burn out. Which is why I hope that you use the advice on here to study wisely. Draw up a timetable, work in advance and study efficiently through the months so you never need to absorb an entire text book before your paper.
